I tell clients that "I can read your body with my hands". When clients come with aches and stiffness in their muscles, once they get on the massage table, it does not take me long to find out which muscles are affected. Most people are surprised that I locate the centre of the problem so quickly - but it is very obvious to me. I can feel a difference in texture - a hardness, as muscle fibres there are still under tension.
Why does this happen? When you have been working the muscles hard or for a long tme without rest, muscles become fatigued. Whilst most of the muscle fibres relax and recover, some fibres may stay bunched up and tight, forming a knot that I can feel. There are a number of ways that I use to unlock the muscle during massage.
